Overview
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular and well-established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is often chosen by trekkers for its relative ease of access and moderate level of difficulty, making it a suitable option for climbers with limited trekking experience.
It is essential to note that while the Marangu Route is considered less physically challenging than some other routes, reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro still requires mental determination, physical fitness, and the ability to cope with high altitudes. Climbers should engage in proper preparation, acclimatization, and heed the advice of experienced guides to increase their chances of a successful and safe summit attempt.

Following a hearty breakfast at your lodge in Moshi, our team will pick you up and accompany you to the Marangu gate to initiate your exciting trek. After completing the necessary paperwork, your trekking adventure will commence, leading you through the lush rainforest. As you ascend, the impressive vegetation will surround you, providing opportunities to spot some of the local primates in their natural habitat. Your journey will lead you to the Mandara Hut, where you can take a well-deserved break and recharge. For an even more breathtaking experience, your knowledgeable guide will accompany you to the Maundi Crater, offering a picturesque view of the stunning Kenyan interior. Get ready for a day filled with incredible natural wonders and memorable sights.
Start your day with an early breakfast to fuel your adventure. As you leave Mandara Hut behind, you will gradually ascend through the timberline and enter the heath and moor zone. After 4 to 6 hours of trekking, you will reach the Horombo Hut, situated at an elevation of 3700m. Here, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Mawenzi, Kibo, and the vast expanse of the Masai steppe. Embrace the awe-inspiring scenery and take in the natural beauty surrounding you on this remarkable journey.
Leaving the pine forest behind, today is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial step for increasing your chances of summit success. After a leisurely breakfast, embark on a 4-hour trek to the striking Zebra Rocks, named after their distinctive black and white stripes. Upon returning to Horombo Hut, a hearty lunch awaits, providing nourishment and the perfect opportunity to relax and recharge in the afternoon. Use this time to regain your strength for the exciting hike awaiting you on the following day. Remember, acclimatization is key to conquering the summit, so embrace this valuable rest day to enhance your Kilimanjaro experience.
Today's trek is both challenging and rewarding. The well-constructed trail leads you through the "Last Water point" and then onto the "saddle," a vast, almost barren plateau that connects the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. This lengthy stage will culminate at Kibo Hut, typically reached after approximately 5 - 6 hours of hiking. Once there, you'll savor an early evening meal before retiring early, as the night will be brief. Rest well and prepare yourself for the thrilling ascent to the summit, which marks the pinnacle of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Today is the momentous "Big Day" – the summit stage of your journey. The final ascent begins around midnight and will be both lengthy and demanding. As you pass the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb gradually ascends. With determination, you'll make your way to Gillman's Point (5681m) at the crater rim of Kilimanjaro, where the sunrise will gently warm the land. The cold night will be a distant memory as you continue for another 1 - 2 hours, reaching the remarkable Uhuru Peak at 5895m. After celebrating your accomplishment, you'll descend to Kibo Hut for a nourishing meal and a well-deserved 1 - 2 hour break before heading back down to Horombo Hut. This extraordinary experience will undoubtedly remain etched in your heart forever.
The final stage takes you through the heath and moor zone to the welcoming Mandara Hut (2700m) where a comforting lunch awaits. As you pass through the tropical rainforest once again, your total trekking time of 6 hours will bring you back to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After bidding farewell to your mountain guides, a brief transfer will bring you back to your hotel in Moshi. There, you can indulge in a warm and rejuvenating shower, basking in the celebration of your remarkable achievement in conquering the summit of Kilimanjaro.
